VBS Review – The Armor of God – 2014
Contributed by Sib Barkley
“Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.” Ephesians 6:11
Heavy truths for young minds, but this was the passage of Scripture we studied during our week of Vacation Bible School. And what a week it was!!!
Our theme was “Bible Boot Camp,” with the children as “troops” in “platoons” and their leaders as “drill sergeants.” We had “grunts” who helped guide the troops during checkin and check-out, along with “recruiters” who were careful to keep track of everyone during “processing.” Everyday we gathered in the “Mess Hall” (Connection Cafe’) for prayer, music and lesson time. On day one we had a surprise visit, as Lee Frakes strode down the aisle in full midieval armor, banging his heavy sword against his massive shield! He proceeded to show and describe every piece of armor for the kids, while I completely forgot to read the passage from Ephesians (which had been our plan) as he did! The kids loved it, and some even had the chance to pass around his very heavy helmet! Thanks Lee. You were great!
Every day we focused on a different piece of armor, and drove the lesson home with time in “Basic Training” (games and obstacle course) and “Weaponry” (crafts). Each platoon also spent time in the Mess Hall having a snack and discussing the day’s lesson with their drill sergeants. At the end of the week each child had memorized Ephesians 6:11 and had a full set of “armor” to take home! We had over 30 children in at tendance every day, including visiting grandchildren, several from other local churches, and even a few with no church home! For many, this was a happy start to a fun summer. For others, it was the very heart of God reaching out to say, “I love you, no matter what is happening in your life!”
None of this would have been possible without the strong support from you all! We had about two dozen volunteers working with the kids at VBS each day. And then there were those who volunteered to help make craft items, bake cookies and prepare other snacks and treats, donate items from the “needed” list, and pray.
A HUGE thank-you to all of you!!!
